The story of Rainbow
Aivazovsky painted Rainbow in 1873, an oil on canvas of 102 x 132 cm now in the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. It shows survivors of a shipwreck in a rowboat, their ship breaking up behind them in a heavy sea under a stormy sky. Ivan Aivazovsky
Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky was a Russian Romantic painter who is considered one of the greatest masters of marine art. Baptized as Hovhannes Aivazian, he was born to Armenian parents in the Black Sea port of Feodosia in Crimea and was mostly based there.
