The story of Belisarius Begging for Alms

David exhibited this large canvas (288 by 312 cm) at the Salon of 1781, after returning from Italy, and it was a great success. The Byzantine general Belisarius, victor over the Vandals in AD 533-534, was by an apocryphal account later blinded by the emperor Justinian and reduced to begging. It is now in the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Lille; a second, reduced version shown at the Salon of 1785 is in the Louvre.

Jacques-Louis David

Jacques-Louis David was a French painter in the Neoclassical style, considered to be the preeminent painter of the era. In the 1780s, his cerebral brand of history painting marked a change in taste away from Rococo frivolity toward classical austerity, severity, and heightened feeling, which harmonized with the moral climate of the final years of the Ancien Régime.
