The story of Venice, Santa Maria della Salute from San Giorgio

Boudin painted this view on his 1895 trip to Venice, where he made many paintings of the city. The picture measures 46.3 by 65.4 cm and carries an inscription at the lower left, 'Venise 95 / E. Boudin'. He made at least three versions of this view. By 1899 it belonged to the Paris gallery Allard et Noël, and by 1919 to the Boston collector Robert J. Edwards, who bequeathed it to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in memory of his mother; the museum accessioned it on 2 April 1925.

Eugène Boudin

Eugène Louis Boudin was one of the first French landscape painters to paint outdoors. Boudin was a marine painter, and expert in the rendering of all that goes upon the sea and along its shores. His pastels, summary and economic, garnered the splendid eulogy of Baudelaire; and Corot called him the "King of the skies".
