The story of The Harvesters

The Harvesters is an oil painting on wood completed by Pieter Bruegel the Elder in 1565. It depicts harvest time in a landscape, in the months of July and August, or late summer. Nicolaes Jonghelinck, a merchant banker and art collector from Antwerp, commissioned it as part of a cycle of six paintings showing the seasonal transitions of the year. Its companions include The Hunters in the Snow, The Gloomy Day and The Return of the Herd in Vienna and The Hay Harvest in Prague.
