The story of Madonna of the Rosary

The Madonna of the Rosary was finished in 1607 and is the only painting by Caravaggio that could be called a standard Baroque altarpiece. Saint Dominic and Saint Peter Martyr suggest it was meant for a Dominican church; the man in black with a ruff at the left is the donor, whose identity is uncertain. The painting was soon on the market in Naples and was bought by a Flemish consortium that included Rubens, who took it to Antwerp and offered it to the Dominican church there.

Caravaggio

Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, known mononymously as Caravaggio, was an Italian painter active in Rome for most of his artistic life. During the final four years of his life, he moved between Naples, Malta, and Sicily. His paintings have been characterized by art critics as combining a realistic observation of the human state, both physical and emotional, with a dramatic use of lighting, which had a formative influence on Baroque painting.
