The story of Mont Sainte-Victoire
During the last twenty years of his life Cézanne painted Mont Sainte-Victoire, near his home in Aix-en-Provence, again and again; the Cleveland Museum of Art counts 36 oil paintings and 45 watercolours of the mountain. He painted this view from life beside a small road leading east from Aix toward the mountain, where two umbrella pines stood at the roadside. A branch of one pine reaches across the sky from the left edge, echoing the mountain's slope and tying the foreground to the distance.
