The story of The Feast of the Rosary

Dürer's Feast of the Rosary (161.5 x 192 cm) was first commissioned by Jakob Fugger while Dürer was in Augsburg, but it was painted in Venice for a fraternity of German merchants of the Fondaco dei Tedeschi, to hang in San Bartolomeo on the Rialto, with completion due by May 1506. Dürer was still working on it in September 1506 when Venetian dignitaries, possibly including Giovanni Bellini, visited his workshop. Emperor Rudolf II bought it in 1606 and took it to Prague; it hung at Strahov Monastery before reaching the National Gallery.

Albrecht Dürer

Albrecht Dürer, sometimes spelled in English as Durer or Duerer, was a German painter, printmaker, and theorist of the German Renaissance. Born in Nuremberg, Dürer established his reputation and influence across Europe in his twenties due to his high-quality woodcut prints. He was in contact with the major Italian artists of his time, including Raphael, Giovanni Bellini and Leonardo da Vinci, and from 1512 was patronized by Emperor Maximilian I.
