The story of The Stolen Kiss

The oil on canvas measures 45 x 55 cm and is traditionally attributed to Fragonard, though some scholars think it may be a collaboration with, or wholly by, his sister-in-law and pupil Marguerite Gérard. In the 1790s it belonged to the Polish king Stanisław August Poniatowski; it passed to the Russian imperial collection in 1817 when Tsar Alexander I acquired the Łazienki Palace, and was moved to the Hermitage in 1895.

Jean-Honoré Fragonard

Jean-Honoré Fragonard was a French painter and printmaker whose late Rococo manner was distinguished by remarkable facility, exuberance, and hedonism. One of the most prolific artists active in the last decades of the Ancien Régime, Fragonard produced more than 550 paintings, of which only five are dated. Among his most popular works are genre paintings conveying an atmosphere of intimacy and veiled eroticism.
