Christ crowns the Virgin Mary before a tooled gold ground, the Holy Spirit as a white dove above them, while two small angels at the foot hold music scrolls. Her blue mantle and his red robe are worked in gold; Gentile's raised pastiglia and punched gold leaf catch the light. J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles.

The story of Coronation of the Virgin

The panel began as a processional banner commissioned around 1420 for a confraternity at the San Francesco monastery in Fabriano. The reverse once showed Saint Francis Receiving the Stigmata, now in the Fondazione Magnani-Rocca near Parma; the panel was split down the middle in 1827. Gentile used pastiglia and gold leaf to build the ornate surface.
