The story of Dressing for the Carnival

Dressing for the Carnival is an 1877 oil painting by Winslow Homer in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It shows a group of African Americans preparing for the festival known in the South as Jonkonnu, in which a Harlequin-like figure is costumed in bright, ragged clothes. Unlike the condescending carnival images common in the Reconstruction era, Homer's scene is nuanced and grave, and one of the children holds the Stars and Stripes.
