The story of The Life Line

Homer saw a demonstration of the breeches buoy, a rope-and-pulley rescue device, at Atlantic City, New Jersey, in the summer of 1883 and finished The Life Line the following year. The picture shows the rescue of a passenger from a stricken ship. Critics recognised it at once as a major contribution to American art, and it is now in the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
