The story of Prisoners from the Front

Prisoners from the Front is an 1866 painting by Winslow Homer and one of his most notable early works. It shows Confederate soldiers surrendering to the Union general Francis Channing Barlow; Homer's experience as a war correspondent likely shaped it. The prisoners lay down their rifles but refuse to bow. The critic Peter Schjeldahl called it 'the most telling of all paintings about the Civil War', and it was shown at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1867.
