The story of Searchlight on Harbor Entrance, Santiago de Cuba

Searchlight on Harbor Entrance, Santiago de Cuba was painted by Winslow Homer from sketches he made in 1895. It shows two cannon atop the Castillo de San Pedro de la Roca (Morro Castle), the Spanish fortress at the entrance to Santiago harbour. The fort played a role in the Battle of Santiago de Cuba in 1898, when the US Navy destroyed a Spanish fleet sheltering there; Homer painted the picture after the battle received renewed publicity in 1901.
