The story of A Visit from the Old Mistress
A Visit from the Old Mistress is an 1876 painting by Winslow Homer, one of several works thought to come from a mid-1870s visit to Virginia, where he had served as a Union war correspondent during the Civil War. Scholars note that its composition is taken from his earlier Prisoners from the Front. It shows an encounter between formerly enslaved women and their former mistress during Reconstruction, and its intended tone is still debated by art historians.
