The story of The Bootleggers
Painted in 1925, the picture is generally read as a reference to rum-running during Prohibition, though Hopper's dealer said it was not a real place but a blend of several scenes. It was exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum and Hopper kept it for almost three decades until the Currier Museum of Art acquired it in 1956.
