The story of Hammamet with Its Mosque

Klee travelled to Tunisia in April 1914 with August Macke and Louis Moilliet. He painted this view of Hammamet from outside the town walls: the upper part shows the mosque between two towers and gardens, the lower part is built from translucent planes of colour. It was during this journey that Klee wrote that colour had taken possession of him. The sheet is part of the Berggruen Klee Collection given to the Metropolitan Museum in 1984.

Paul Klee

Paul Klee was a Swiss-born German artist. His highly individual style was influenced by movements in art that included expressionism, cubism, and surrealism.
