The story of Villa R
Klee painted Villa R in oil on cardboard in 1919, one of several landscapes of those years in which letters appear as motifs of their own. The meaning of the R is not explained by the title; it is often linked to a Villa Rosa that Klee saw on his travels in Italy. In 1939 the painting was confiscated from the Städtische Galerie in Frankfurt as 'degenerate art' and sold at the Galerie Fischer auction in Lucerne, where the Kunstmuseum Basel bought it.
