The story of Portrait of Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier and His Wife
Marie-Anne Lavoisier, who had taken drawing lessons from David, commissioned the double portrait; David was paid 7,000 livres in December 1788. The table holds scientific instruments, including a gasometer, a still and a glass bell jar, and Marie-Anne's portfolio of drawings sits at the left. The painting was kept out of the Salon of 1789 for fear that a portrait of a man tied to the royal administration would provoke hostility. It remained little seen until 1889. The Metropolitan Museum of Art acquired it in 1977 from the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research.

Jacques-Louis David
Jacques-Louis David was a French painter in the Neoclassical style, considered to be the preeminent painter of the era. In the 1780s, his cerebral brand of history painting marked a change in taste away from Rococo frivolity toward classical austerity, severity, and heightened feeling, which harmonized with the moral climate of the final years of the Ancien Régime.
