The story of The Lictors Bring to Brutus the Bodies of His Sons

David worked on the painting for more than two years and first showed it at the Paris Salon of 1789. The subject is Lucius Junius Brutus, who had to order the deaths of his own sons after they conspired against the new republic. The return of the bodies is an episode David added himself: it is not in Livy or Plutarch. The canvas measures 323 by 422 cm.

Jacques-Louis David

Jacques-Louis David was a French painter in the Neoclassical style, considered to be the preeminent painter of the era. In the 1780s, his cerebral brand of history painting marked a change in taste away from Rococo frivolity toward classical austerity, severity, and heightened feeling, which harmonized with the moral climate of the final years of the Ancien Régime.
