The story of The Lion Hunt (Nationalmuseum version)

The Lion Hunt is a series of oil paintings Delacroix produced in the mid-1800s. He drew on detailed studies of animals in zoos and of North African people and material culture, and was influenced by Rubens's hunt pictures. The most monumental version, from 1855, is in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux (its top half was badly damaged in a fire in 1870); Delacroix made at least two sketches of it, now in the Musée d'Orsay and the Nationalmuseum, and later versions are in Boston and Chicago.
