The story of The Battle of the Kearsarge and the Alabama

The painting commemorates the Battle of Cherbourg of 19 June 1864, when the Union cruiser USS Kearsarge sank the Confederate raider CSS Alabama off the French coast. Manet had not seen the battle and worked from press accounts. Within a month he had finished the picture, and it was shown in Alfred Cadart's print shop in Paris. Marguerite Charpentier acquired it in 1878. It is now in the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
