The story of Masked Ball at the Opera

Manet made his preparatory sketches from life at the opera house on the rue Le Peletier in Paris, which burned down later in 1873, and painted the picture in his studio on the rue d'Amsterdam. Several friends posed for it, among them the composer Emmanuel Chabrier. The 1874 Salon refused it as too naturalist. The singer Jean-Baptiste Faure later owned it, and it was given to the National Gallery of Art in 1982.
