The story of The Spanish Singer

The Spanish Singer, also known as Guitarrero, was painted in Manet's studio in 1860 with a model and props. It shows the influence of Spanish art, especially Velázquez. It was Manet's first painting accepted at the Paris Salon, in 1861, where Théophile Gautier praised its 'very true color' and 'vigorous brush'. It has been at the Metropolitan Museum of Art since 1949.
