The story of The Balcony

The Balcony shows four figures: the seated painter Berthe Morisot, the painter Jean Baptiste Antoine Guillemet in the centre, the violinist Fanny Claus on the right and, in the dark interior, possibly Manet's son Léon Leenhoff. It was shown at the 1869 Paris Salon and stayed with Manet until his death in 1883. The painter Gustave Caillebotte bought it in 1884 and left it to the French state in 1894. It is now in the Musée d'Orsay, Paris.
