The story of The Fifer

Manet painted the boy, a musician of the Imperial Guard sent by commander Lejosne, after visiting the Prado in 1865; the flattened composition recalls Velazquez. The Salon jury rejected it in 1866 and Emile Zola defended Manet in print. It came to the French state with the Camondo bequest in 1911 and has been in the Musée d'Orsay since 1986.
