The story of Luxe, Calme et Volupté

Matisse painted it in 1904 after a summer working at Saint-Tropez alongside the Neo-Impressionists Paul Signac and Henri-Edmond Cross. Signac bought the work and it was shown at the Salon des Indépendants in 1905. It is considered the starting point of Fauvism, and the title comes from Baudelaire's poem L'Invitation au voyage.
