The story of Starry Night

Starry Night (Norwegian: Stjernenatt) is an 1893 oil-on-canvas painting by Edvard Munch. It shows the coastline at Åsgårdstrand, a small beach resort south of Oslo where Munch spent his summers from the late 1880s; according to Wikipedia it is the view from the hotel window where he first fell in love. The Getty notes that Munch tried to capture the emotions called forth by the night rather than its picturesque qualities, and that the vague shape on the fence may be the shadow of two lovers, a recurring theme in his work.
