The story of Portrait of Pope Pius VII

David painted the portrait from life at the Tuileries around the end of February 1805 to thank the Pope for attending Napoleon's coronation. He shows Pius in an introspective pose rather than as the most powerful prelate in Christianity, and was paid 10,000 francs. It hung in the Luxembourg Palace before entering the Musée Napoléon (the Louvre), where it has been since 1827. David made three copies; the one he took to Brussels is now lost.

Jacques-Louis David

Jacques-Louis David was a French painter in the Neoclassical style, considered to be the preeminent painter of the era. In the 1780s, his cerebral brand of history painting marked a change in taste away from Rococo frivolity toward classical austerity, severity, and heightened feeling, which harmonized with the moral climate of the final years of the Ancien Régime.
