The story of La Grenouillère

In the summer of 1869 Renoir and Claude Monet set up their easels side by side at La Grenouillère, a popular boating and bathing resort on the Seine near Bougival, and painted the same views. The quick, broken brushwork they used for the light on the water is often described as the beginning of Impressionism. Monet's version of the same scene is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
