The story of La Promenade

Painted in 1870, shortly before the Franco-Prussian War, when Renoir was working closely with Monet and moving towards the broken brushwork of Impressionism. The subject looks back to the garden lovers of 18th-century painters such as Watteau and Fragonard. The Getty Museum acquired it in 1989.
