The story of The Large Bathers (Les Grandes Baigneuses)

Renoir worked on the picture for about three years, making many preparatory drawings, after a trip to Italy had turned him towards Raphael and Ingres. The poses derive from a 17th-century relief by François Girardon at Versailles. It was shown at Georges Petit's gallery in 1887 and marks the height of his so-called dry or Ingresque period.
