The story of Madame Georges Charpentier and Her Children

Marguerite Charpentier, wife of the publisher Georges Charpentier, commissioned the portrait and used her influence to have it hung prominently at the Salon of 1879, where it was a great success and established Renoir as a portraitist. The Metropolitan Museum bought it in 1907.
