The story of Pont Neuf, Paris
Renoir painted the view in 1872 from an upper window of a café opposite the bridge. His brother Edmond recalled stopping passers-by to ask them the time so that Renoir could sketch them as they stood still. The picture was sold at the Impressionists' auction at the Hôtel Drouot in 1875.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir was a French artist who was a leading painter in the development of the Impressionist style. It has been said that, as a celebrator of beauty and especially feminine sensuality, "Renoir is the final representative of a tradition which runs directly from Rubens to Watteau."
