The story of Two Watermills and an Open Sluice

Two Watermills and an Open Sluice is dated 1653 and is the only dated one of six known variations on the theme. The half-timbered mill is typical of the Bentheim area in Germany, which Ruisdael visited in the early 1650s. Ruisdael was the first to make water mills the main subject of a painting.
