The story of Reapers Resting in a Wheat Field

Sargent spent the autumn of 1885 in the Cotswolds, and painted this scene in a wheat field near the village of Broadway, Worcestershire. The reapers sit in a semicircle with their sickles stuck in the ground while stacked sheaves show the harvest well under way; the long, wavy brushstrokes reflect his Impressionist leanings of those years.

His oeuvre documents worldwide travel, from Venice to the Tyrol, Corfu, Capri, Spain, the Middle East, Montana, Maine, and Florida.
