The story of Setting Out to Fish

Setting Out to Fish (En route pour la pêche), also known as Oyster Gatherers of Cancale, shows women and children of the Breton village of Cancale heading out to gather shellfish. Sargent prepared it carefully for the Paris Salon of 1878; it was his second Salon entry and was warmly reviewed. The painting was long in the Corcoran Gallery of Art and came to the National Gallery of Art in 2014.

John Singer Sargent

John Singer Sargent was an American expatriate artist, considered the "leading portrait painter of his generation" for his evocations of Belle Époque and Edwardian-era luxury. He created roughly 900 oil paintings and more than 2,000 watercolors, as well as countless sketches and charcoal drawings. His oeuvre documents worldwide travel, from Venice to the Tyrol, Corfu, Capri, Spain, the Middle East, Montana, Maine, and Florida.
