The story of Self-Portrait

David painted the picture in 1794 while imprisoned at the Hôtel des Fermes for having supported Robespierre. It was his third and last self-portrait. He gave it to his former student Jean-Baptiste Isabey, and it entered the Louvre in 1852. The mirror he used was supplied by his pupil Pierre-Maximilien Delafontaine, which explains the reversed hands: David was right-handed but holds the brush in his left.

Jacques-Louis David

Jacques-Louis David was a French painter in the Neoclassical style, considered to be the preeminent painter of the era. In the 1780s, his cerebral brand of history painting marked a change in taste away from Rococo frivolity toward classical austerity, severity, and heightened feeling, which harmonized with the moral climate of the final years of the Ancien Régime.
