The story of Girl Eating Oysters

The Oyster Eater is a small oil-on-panel painting by Jan Steen dating to c. 1658-1660 and in the Mauritshuis in The Hague since 1936. The oysters carry an erotic meaning in Dutch genre painting, and the empty shells suggest the brevity of earthly pleasure. The arched top of the panel echoes the curve of the girl's head and shoulder.
