The story of Taking a Snow Town
Taking a Snow Town was completed in 1891 and is kept in the State Russian Museum in St Petersburg; the canvas measures 156 x 282 cm. It shows the climax of an old game played by the Siberian Cossacks on the last day of Maslenitsa, which Surikov had watched as a child in Krasnoyarsk. In 1899 the collector Vladimir von Meck bought it, and in 1908 it entered the Russian Museum.
