The story of The Farewell of Telemachus and Eucharis

David painted the picture in 1818 during his exile in Brussels, taking the lovers from François Fénelon's 1699 novel Les Aventures de Télémaque, itself based on the Odyssey. The Count von Schönborn-Wiesentheid bought it after hearing of the project through David's Brussels studio. Telemachus is shown choosing duty over passion as he takes leave of Eucharis, who is dressed as a huntress like Artemis. The painting is now in the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.

Jacques-Louis David

Jacques-Louis David was a French painter in the Neoclassical style, considered to be the preeminent painter of the era. In the 1780s, his cerebral brand of history painting marked a change in taste away from Rococo frivolity toward classical austerity, severity, and heightened feeling, which harmonized with the moral climate of the final years of the Ancien Régime.
