The story of Danaë
Painted for Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, grandson of Pope Paul III, and seen in progress by Michelangelo in Titian's studio in 1545. This first version is the one with Cupid at Danaë's feet; later versions replace him with an old servant. It passed from the Farnese family into the royal collection in Naples.
