The story of La Bella
A May 1536 letter from Francesco Maria I della Rovere, Duke of Urbino, to his agent in Venice documents that the portrait was commissioned from Titian. The painting passed by inheritance to Florence in 1631 with Vittoria della Rovere. The sitter has never been identified for certain: she has been proposed as the Duke's wife Eleonora Gonzaga or as her mother Isabella d'Este.
