The story of A Man with a Quilted Sleeve

Long misidentified as the poet Ludovico Ariosto, the portrait has been catalogued by the National Gallery since 2017 as a portrait of Gerolamo (?) Barbarigo. Rembrandt borrowed its pose for his own self-portraits after seeing it in Amsterdam. The National Gallery acquired it in 1904 after a public fundraising appeal.
