The story of A Maid Asleep

This is probably Vermeer's first painting of a figure in a domestic interior. X-rays show that he first painted a man in the doorway and a dog looking at him, then painted both out, leaving the sleeper alone. The picture was in the 1696 Amsterdam sale of Vermeer's paintings, described as a drunken sleeping maid at a table. It came to the Metropolitan Museum with the Benjamin Altman bequest in 1913.

Johannes Vermeer

Johannes Vermeer was a Dutch painter who specialized in domestic interior scenes of middle-class life. He is considered one of the greatest painters of the Dutch Golden Age. During his lifetime, he was a moderately successful provincial genre painter, recognized in Delft and The Hague. He produced relatively few paintings, primarily earning his living as an art dealer. He was not wealthy; at his death, his wife was left in debt.
