The story of Christ in the House of Martha and Mary
Painted when Vermeer was in his early twenties, this is the largest of his surviving works and the only one with a subject from the Bible (Luke 10:38-42). The broad handling and warm colour show him still working as a history painter, before he turned to small interiors. The signature was found during cleaning in 1901. The sons of the Scottish thread manufacturer William Allan Coats gave it to the National Gallery of Scotland in 1927.

Johannes Vermeer
Johannes Vermeer was a Dutch painter who specialized in domestic interior scenes of middle-class life. He is considered one of the greatest painters of the Dutch Golden Age. During his lifetime, he was a moderately successful provincial genre painter, recognized in Delft and The Hague. He produced relatively few paintings, primarily earning his living as an art dealer. He was not wealthy; at his death, his wife was left in debt.
