The story of Officer and Laughing Girl
Painted around 1657, this is among the first interiors in which Vermeer set figures in a corner of a room lit from a window on the left. The officer, large and dark in the foreground, makes the girl look small and bright by contrast. The wall map of Holland and West Friesland, drawn with west at the top, returns in later paintings. Henry Clay Frick bought the picture in 1911.

Johannes Vermeer
Johannes Vermeer was a Dutch painter who specialized in domestic interior scenes of middle-class life. He is considered one of the greatest painters of the Dutch Golden Age. During his lifetime, he was a moderately successful provincial genre painter, recognized in Delft and The Hague. He produced relatively few paintings, primarily earning his living as an art dealer. He was not wealthy; at his death, his wife was left in debt.
