The story of Woman in Blue Reading a Letter

Painted around 1663, this is one of Vermeer's most restrained interiors: the window is not shown, only its light on the wall. The map behind the woman is a map of Holland and West Friesland that also appears in Officer and Laughing Girl. The picture came to the city of Amsterdam with the Van der Hoop bequest in 1854 and has been on loan to the Rijksmuseum since 1885. A restoration completed in 2011 removed yellowed varnish and brought back the cool blue of the jacket.

Johannes Vermeer

Johannes Vermeer was a Dutch painter who specialized in domestic interior scenes of middle-class life. He is considered one of the greatest painters of the Dutch Golden Age. During his lifetime, he was a moderately successful provincial genre painter, recognized in Delft and The Hague. He produced relatively few paintings, primarily earning his living as an art dealer. He was not wealthy; at his death, his wife was left in debt.
