The story of The Princess from the Land of Porcelain

Whistler painted the picture between 1863 and 1865 with Christine Spartali, sister of the Pre-Raphaelite artist Marie Spartali Stillman, as his model. It later hung in the dining room of the shipping magnate Frederick Leyland, the room Whistler decorated as the Peacock Room. Charles Lang Freer bought the painting and then the entire room, and it still hangs above the fireplace in the Peacock Room at the Freer Gallery of Art.
