The story of Wooded Upland Landscape
One of Gainsborough's late pastoral landscapes — a winding country path through a wooded upland with figures and cattle moving toward the viewer. Although best remembered for his society portraits, Gainsborough always said he preferred to paint landscapes; the late ones, freer and more atmospheric than the work that paid the bills, anticipate Constable by a generation. A quiet, contemplative addition to any room.
Thomas Gainsborough
Thomas Gainsborough was an English portrait and landscape painter, draughtsman, and printmaker. Along with his rival Sir Joshua Reynolds, he is considered one of the most important British artists of the second half of the 18th century. He painted quickly, and the works of his maturity are characterised by a light palette and easy strokes.
