The story of The Last of the Buffalo

The Last of the Buffalo was painted in 1888 and is Albert Bierstadt's last large canvas. It shows a buffalo hunt by Native Americans on horseback in front of a vast plain and distant snow-covered peaks. Wikipedia reads it as a melancholy reflection on westward expansion, when hunting had driven the herds nearly to extinction. The picture combines elements Bierstadt had sketched on his western expeditions. In 1998 the US Postal Service put it on one of the stamps in its Four Centuries of American Art set.

Albert Bierstadt

Albert Bierstadt was a German-American painter best known for his lavish, sweeping landscapes of the American West. He joined several journeys of the westward expansion to paint the scenes. He was not the first artist to record the sites, but he was the foremost painter of them for the remainder of the 19th century.
